Srinagar, Sept 13 (ANI): Nature lovers organised a workshop on preservation of wetlands of Kashmir valley for future generations. It was organised by the Environmental Policy Group (EPG). The title of the workshop was ‘Wetland Significance, Threats and Conservation’. The aim of the workshop was to educate people about the importance and requirement of wetlands, forests and overall water bodies.  Many prominent environmentalists, scientists, social activists, and volunteers of some Non- Government Organisations (NGO) participated in the workshop. During the workshop, a number of short films were screened along with PowerPoint Presentations. Special lectures were also given by environmentalists, wetlands experts and researchers regarding the preservation of wetlands including Hokersar. Hokersar Wetland is one of the famous wetlands of Kashmir where lakhs of migratory birds arrive every year from different cold countries including Siberia. Wetlands are considered the kidney of earth that is always playing a major role during any disaster in the shape of absorbing the billions of gallons of water. But for the last thirty years, wetlands especially Hokersar has been hit badly due to encroachment done by people. Majority of experts also suggested that such types of programmes should be continued so that more people, especially youths will participate and play their role to protect and preserve the wetlands of the valley.
