The development of a quantum computer on cold calcium ions is one of the youngest projects of the Russian Quantum Centre. Inside a vacuum chamber there is a tube containing compressed calcium. It is heated, which creates a flow of atoms. Then lasers come into play: this is how scientists ionise these atoms, producing qubits for further work of the quantum computer. It is able to bypass the existing equipment not only in the speed of solution, but also in the number of tasks. So quantum technologies promise a breakthrough in a number of areas.
